Get Packin’

YAY! Moving into a new place is so much fun, until you start packing and you realize how much stuff you actually have to move. Sigh.

Pack an overnight bag with all the essentials you need, including toiletries and a change or two of clothes. The last thing you want to do after moving is try to look for your toothbrush, only to discover it’s packed away in some box that is completely inaccessible.

Use laundry bins, suitcases, hampers, and baskets to pack your belongings – it cuts down on having to find or purchase boxes.

If you’re using boxes, label the tops and sides. This way you can see what’s in the box even if it’s stacked 20 stories high.

Color code! Pick a different Color of tape or marker for each room in your house. This is especially helpful if you use a moving service.

If you are using a moving service, number your boxes. This way you can safely say, “Box #17 is missing!”

With your clothes still hanging in the closet, take a plastic garbage bag and scoop up your clothes from the bottom up. This way, your clothes will stay on the hangers and won’t take but a minute to unpack. Boom!

Pack your plates vertically pack records – they won’t break as easily.

Speaking of plates… Use shirts and sweaters instead of newspaper or bubble wrap.

Use clean socks to pack glassware for extra padding.

Garbage or contractor bags are excellent for packing sheets and other linens.

Leave stuff in drawers – unless they’re breakable or fragile.

Enlist the help of friends, but make sure you are 100% all packed. Your friends do not want to help you pack (nor did they sign up for it).

Pack or unpack one room at a time and stay focused. It will feel less overwhelming this way!
